Ohio Magazine selects Licking County village
By KENT MALLETT • Sentinel Reporter • September 1, 2009
GRANVILLE — The Greater Licking County Convention and Visitors Bureau announced Tuesday that Ohio Magazine chose Granville as one of Ohio's Best Hometowns for 2010. The village won the central Ohio region, one of five regions in the state. Granville will be featured in the cover story of the November issue of Ohio Magazine.
The award was based on six categories -- community spirit, education, entertainment, health and safety, business environment, and culture and heritage. Dublin was the central Ohio winner for 2009, following Marysville for 2008.
"We're honored to have that acknowledgment," Mayor Melissa Hartfield said. "It speaks well for Granville and the community members, business and amenities. I hope this will be good for business, retail and restaurants in the economy we're experiencing right now."
Susan Fryer, executive director of the Greater Licking County Convention and Visitors Bureau, formed a committee of Granville public and private officials to lay the groundwork for the nomination. Local writer and pastor Jeff Gill wrote the essays, and Barbara Stambaugh of Denison University assisted with the editing. "To win a nomination such as this is great for a community," Fryer wrote in an e-mail. "Publicity in this fashion can help attract homeowners and business who want to relocate to the Granville and Licking County area as well as bring in visitors to the area."
Hartfield also credited the Granville Area Chamber of Commerce and its executive director, Maggie Barno, for their work on the nomination.
The visitors bureau and the Ohio Magazine editors and staff will plan a hometown celebration, Fryer said. Granville also will receive signs stating the village is an Ohio's Best Hometown winner.
"We want to highlight the great communities of Ohio and the great things they have going on there, in some pretty unique places," said Jennifer Rogers, assistant editor of Ohio Magazine.
The timing of the announcement will be good for promotion of the village, Hartfield said.
"We're proud to have this honor," the mayor said. "It says a lot for the county. Fall is a great time because we have so many activities going on."
The Ohio Division of Travel and Tourism's economic impact report states that Licking County's direct sales to travelers totaled $283.1 million in sales in 2005. State and local taxes in 2005 were $26.5 million and $14.7 million respectively. In addition, sales to tourists supported 7,500 direct and indirect jobs in Licking County.
Kendal at Granville gives a soldier (and one of their own) a party!
The residents and staff at Kendal at Granville are family, so when one of their own is going to Iraq to serve her country, then much ado is to be made. Andrea Davis, a food staff employee for Kendal, will leave for a year-long tour of duty in Iraq this August. She was presented with a cake, cards and well-wishes to send her on her way. All Kendal staff and residents hope Andrea stays safe and comes back with lots of stories to tell. Good luck Andrea!

Elderhostel brings "Gardening in Small Spaces" to Kendal
Rain threatened to hamper a day of potting and planting but stayed away just long enough to allow for residents a nd guests to take part in an insightful discussion and lesson about how to start scaling down those lovely gardens they have all grown to love. We all know that in time, taking care of those gardens may be more than they want to deal with.
Author and professor, Debra Knapke, instructed the attendees how how to best care for a small garden and ways to get the most out of a small space. Everyone also headed outside to receive their pot, plants and soil to learn the correct way to plant a pot for the best results. The session received rave reviews from many attendees and there will be more Elderhostel events at Kendal to come!
